What are the benefits of Cataract Surgery?

Benefits of Cataract Surgery can include improved un-corrected (without glasses), corrected visual acuity and improvements in contrast and colour.

If you have astigmatisms, modern artificial lenses can be placed to correct some or all of your astigmatism, resulting in better vision.

Many studies have shown improvement in quality of life and safety following cataract surgery.

Are there risks of Cataract Surgery?

Every surgical procedure carries risks. Whist Dr Ferdinands will make every attempt to minimize risk, complications can still occur.

Possible risks include:

  • Infection in the eye: risk is 1 in 1000 (0.1%)

  • Bleeding within the eye:

  • Excessive Inflammation

  • Retinal Detachment:

  • Corneal Clouding:

  • Dislocation of cataract lens material:

  • Capsular rupture

  • Blindness: risk is in the order of 1 in 100,000 (0.001%)
