What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are an opacification in the lens of the eye. This can be a normal part of aging and can affect the quality of vision. If the cataract is prominent, distance and near images can be blurred or patients may notice glare and light scatter (especially whilst driving at night).

In rare circumstances, cataracts can develop quickly in young patients with diabetes, those who have been on steroid medication or if there is a past history of eye trauma.

How do you treat Cataracts?

Cataracts are successfully treated with Cataract Surgery. This is small incision surgery and is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in Australia. It has a high rate of success thanks to modern methods.

The cataract is removed and a new lens is placed in the eye. This lens is based on individual patient measurement and is unique for each patient.

Do I need
Cataract Surgery?

Not all patients with Cataracts require Cataract Surgery. Cataracts are a normal part of aging. In most cases, if vision is reduced or if there are prominent symptoms from the Cataract, then Cataract surgery is recommended.

Your optometrist or ophthalmologist will usually recommend surgery if they believe you will obtain visual benefit from the operation.

Cataracts cannot be cured by any type of medication, eye exercise, diet, alternative therapy or glasses. Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract.

How successful is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract Surgery carries a 98% success rate for improving vision if the rest of the eye is healthy. If there is macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes or other eye problems, final vision may be limited by these problems.
